Brisbane City Council said almost one year’s worth of landfill was picked up during last month’s clean-up – 291,000 tonnes of rubbish… It would seem that many people were unprepared for the flooding in their neighbourhood or were unable to remove their property in time.
The Flood Response Tower is an multi-layered and multi-functional structure, which will better equip neighbourhoods and residents at risk of flooding throughout Brisbane:
- storage facility for fully inundated houses in local neighbourhood or those without access to vehicle/assistance in transporting possessions to high ground
- emergency equipment storage
- organisation point for police, emergency services, and community groups
- mooring/tie-up point for emergency boats and river debris
- local visual landmark reference and remembrance of past flood levels
- lookout for watching the flood and emergency services
- landscape ‘folly’ symbolically connecting flood prone areas of Brisbane
Building a series of FRTs in areas at high risk of inundation would provide residents with an alternative means of evacuation and storage and could reduce the levels of property loss. As well, the FRTs will be a constant reminder to residents living in these areas to be prepared for the possibility of floods.

Brisbane is a flood-prone city and these structures offer a sensible reminder to residents of flood prone areas that they live within such an environment. Aside from their pragmatic offerings, maybe with some design enhancement, these towers could become an iconic part of the the residential park system within Brisbane?
i rate this highly
These structures would work well
