PUBLIC ACCESS

My idea focuses on the river edge between Howard Smith Waves and Sydney Street Ferry Terminal. The current issue with this area is public river access. The floating walkway was a great solution allowing public river views and interaction; unfortunately it was inundated so I used this opportunity to design a new approach. There are two main parts to my design; a tunnel and UV lighting. To achieve public assess I propose to tunnel through the cliff area and reclaim portions of river facing properties. The new tunnel has both entrances above the 2011 flood level and slowly slopes down to provide the public new and exciting underwater views of the river. The reclaimed area along the river will become a public promenade connecting existing river walkways along New Farm and CBD. UV lighting is proposed to improve water quality which has always been a concern. River water is collected from underwater UV lined pipes eliminating bacteria and directed using solar powered pumps into bio-retention basins to filter out solids. The filtered water will then be used as a feature along the new promenade. Additionally excavated areas lined with UV lights will activate and light up as water level rises.

The floating walkway was floated on the water rather than on adjacent private property due to strong protests and from those property owners at the time. The tunnel through cliff area is hideously expensive and will have personal security and surveilance issues. The water is brown and will be as exciting to look at above ground as it is below ground.Have a look at River Heart Park at Ipswich to help develope a deeper understanding(real world) of the challenges relationship between brown river water and visually orientated water features. But i must say, i generally think your concept is quite exciting- well done

The tunnel is a great idea because it can be used pre flood, during flood and post flood. This would be a great place to be at high tide and during flood due to the riverscape views.

a tunnel is a long term solution to a problem that may not happen for another 40 years, it is a great solution. awesome work
