Dross:Strata & Retraction:Adaptation

Dross:Strata – accepts the idea that the next rapid growth phase of the adaptive cycle will create socioeconomic and cultural densification on the higher terrain. Therefore what uses will be appropriate to be included within the fluid terrain to avoid it becoming defunct? This concept suggests a need to visualise and seize design opportunities that can manifest themselves on new (previously wasted) layers not only above the fluid terrain but also within.

Retraction:Adaptation – probes the relationships that could exist between the retracted urban densification and the fluid terrain. It will also consider how the dense urban areas can be made more resilient.

Urban retraction is one of the ideas people have been tossing around, and it’s fantastic that you are tackling it in real terms, Steve. Your strategy seems sound to me, and if we free our minds from an attachment to all that is currently solid, I reckon it just could work. I look forward to seeing more of your application of this challenging strategy.

A very sound concept that is already highly developed in your brief submission. Urban agriculture is an interesting potential landuse within the fluid terrain and is a “normal” use of this zone throughout SE Asia. The test would be its acceptance within the dominant Western cultural conservatism as exemplified by the scaremongers who successfully opposed use of recycled water despite the water shortages of our all too recent drought episode.
